TTD IN ACTION

TANGOS EN ESCENA
(Tangos on Stage)

“Tangos en Escena” is a project to promote the scenic creation of short Tango Dance works. It is the result of the collaboration and joint work of TTD  (Trabajadores del Tango Danza), the Folklore Department of the National University of the Arts and the Milongas of CABA: Bilongón, Muy Lunes and Parakultural. Articulating with fundamental actors in the community both academically and socially is part of our vision as an Association.

Tango Dance historically suffers from the lack of state and private support for scenic creation, which causes our artistic production to stagnate, always reproducing the same stories, and taking away the resources to express current content. The economic crisis we are experiencing and the pandemic only accentuated this situation. It is for this reason that in July 2023 we held the “Tangos en Escena” call in order to provide resources to artists and new directors to create and develop short works of Tango Dance.

“Tangos en Escena” received more than 20 work projects. The selected proposals were: La Otra Orilla, Mu.Danza and Lavandina.

It should be noted that this and all the projects promoted by the TTD are possible thanks to the solidarity economic contribution of the global tango community and the collective ad honorem work of the members of our Association. This allows us to continue generating bonds of collaboration and trust that are essential to continue building collectively.

The works are going through their final stage of production, that is why we want to tell you that we are going to carry out different performances of “Tangos on Stage” so that you can enjoy these new creations.

BAGS OF FOOD AID

Between 21 May 2020 and 11 September 2021 we have carried out the Food Aid plan. We have made 32 deliveries with a total of 1075 bags of different sizes, assembled according to the number of family members

and distinguishing food for celiacs and vegetarians and also including feminine hygiene products and ecological nappies. We have also tried to generate work for our colleagues by hiring a freight service for the delivery of the bags and the purchase of products from reinvented tangueres.

This action required a great human and logistical effort that was carried out in a totally self-managed and solidary way by TTD (without any state support). It wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the great support of the local and the international community that helped us with economic contributions & donations, with products made by themselves and with their presence volunteering for the purchase, assembly and delivery of the bags. That is why we want to thank all of you deeply on behalf of the whole TTD team!

ELEVEN AL TANGO I

In December 2020, in the midst of a pandemic and deep a crisis in our sector due to several months of decrease and even impossibility to work, we organised an international online event: the “Eleven al tango”.

”Leer_más”

It was an online event of classes and shows between the 1st and the 11th of December with the participation of 80 professionals who were chosen through open calls to the community; 60 theoretical and practical classes of tango and complementary disciplines were given. More than 250 students from all over Argentina and the world participated in this unprecedented 11-day cycle. We concluded the event with an online meeting where there were talks, live music, two exhibitions of dancers and six tango DJs presenting tandas of both traditional and 21st century tango.

The novelty of this event was that students registered for a solidarity fee that allowed them access 3 classes that were to be chosen according to the title and without knowing which teacher would teach it: this allowed students to get to know the work of different teachers. In addition, thanks to the number of registrations received, we were able to award the same number of scholarships to those who wanted to participate, but did not have the financial means to do so. Therefore, the Eleven al Tango was made by all of us and for all of us!

Holding the Eleven was one more way of materialising one of the objectives that gives life to TTD: the recognition and value as tango workers, acknowledging us as a collective that fights for its dignity and the extension of tango workers rights in our society.

And stay tuned for the next edition in 2021!

PLÁCIDOS DOMINGOS CYCLE

Through consultations with the tango community, the problem of the lack of opportunities for independent tango dance companies to present their works emerged. Therefore, during the month of September 2019 we organised and produced in a cooperative way together with them and the club/theatre Espacio Sísmico the cycle of short plays called “Plácidos Domingos” (Placid Sundays). Ten companies and performing arts proposals (using tango as their main language) were chosen by means of an open call and were able to disseminate their creations.

The objectives of the cycle were to disseminate tango dance, to generate work spaces for new artistic groups; , to allow first works to be presented alongside more experienced companies thus causing a trans generational exchange and to promote the formation/training of audiences.

BAILONGOS (POPULAR DANCE)

In 2018 and 2019 we organised two massive milongas! More than 500 colleagues, milonga dancers and friends attended.

They were a real party where we were able to share with everyone what we have been doing. Also, these events allowed us to raise funds to self-finance the procedures for legal status and the actions we carry out for the community.
